I don't think it hurts to have more followers. The key in my opinion is viral marketing. Developing a social network i.e. Facebook, Twitter etc. and then posting your work to those sites. You may want to post for a while before you do that. I made that mistake when I first started and due to my inexperience I think I lost a few readers that I may have otherwise kept. Also, if you are familiar with RSS feeds this can be a way to attract readers too.
